Preserve NYC Employees' (Active & Retired) Healthcare

Over 240,000 people who have faithfully served New York City for decades, including through some of the most turbulent times, are now extremely vulnerable due to age and disability and are at risk of losing their current health benefits.  The latest effort to force us into a Medicare Advantage plan was halted by a New York State Court, but more attempts to renege on promised healthcare are on the horizon.  It is not just former employees who should be concerned. How long will it be before the current City workforce is on the receiving end of a gutted health program with more prior authorizations for routine and emergency procedures and higher copays and premiums for fewer services?  Case in point: the City Health Insurance Stabilization Fund and Retiree Heath Benefit Trust........follow the money.

We need to come together to stop the erosion of healthcare benefits.  We all contribute to Medicare and Social Security all our working lives and, today, they help take care of retirees over 65 or disabled. Abandoning Traditional Medicare as a give back hurts us today, and will impact you tomorrow. There are alternatives to satisfy the needs of all the parties involved, as suggested in this Daily News op-ed:

An Open Letter to Mayor Adams

Dear Mayor Adams,   Please do not appeal Judge Frank's decision dated March 3, 2022.  Sit with retirees to understand the shortcomings of the NYC Medicare Advantage Plus Plan as proposed and to craft a better program that will not diminish our healthcare. This includes continuing to give retirees a choice of plans that address diverse, individual medical circumstances, such as retaining traditional Medicare-plus-supplemental coverage options.   Together, we can find ways to help save the City money.  We also ask that you impose strict parameters on how the Health Insurance Stabilization Fund and Retiree Health Benefit Trust can be used.
