Refusing to be silenced as the generation of the future.

As students of Flora Park Comprehensive High School, we are concerned about the restrictive nature of some school rules, particularly the policy prohibiting the braiding of hair with fibre. This rule disproportionately affects students from diverse cultural backgrounds, where braiding with fibre is a common and practical hairstyle. By allowing this practice, parents can budget more effectively, as it reduces the frequency and cost of hairstyling. Furthermore, alternative braiding styles permitted by the school, such as cornrows, are not suitable for all hair types.

Moreover, this policy has unintended consequences, including increased bullying and body image issues among students. Students with hair textures or head shapes that are not accommodated by the allowed braiding styles are vulnerable to ridicule and exclusion, leading to decreased self-esteem and confidence. We respectfully urge the school administration to reconsider this policy and engage with students and parents to address concerns. The current rule is driving away potential learners, causing distress among current students, and creating a hostile environment. We hope that our concerns will be heard and addressed.
