Accountability for Absent Fathers
We, the undersigned, call upon the South African government, lawmakers, and relevant authorities to introduce stronger legal consequences for fathers who neglect their responsibilities toward their children.
Too many mothers are left to carry the emotional, physical, mental, and financial burden of raising children alone, while absent fathers face little to no accountability for their neglect. This ongoing strain places immense pressure on mothers, often affecting their wellbeing, stability, and ability to provide a secure environment for their children.
The emotional and financial stress caused by parental abandonment can have long lasting effects on both mothers and children, increasing the risk of trauma, emotional distress, and cycles of generational hardship being passed down from one generation to the next. When one parent is forced to carry the full responsibility alone, the impact extends beyond the immediate household and can shape the future wellbeing of the child and family line.
Children deserve consistent support, care, and involvement from both parents whenever possible. This petition calls for stronger laws and enforcement measures to ensure that fathers who abandon their parental duties, whether emotionally, physically, or financially, are held responsible through appropriate legal action.
Every child has the right to support, stability, dignity, and the opportunity to grow up in a healthy and secure environment. Fathers must be held accountable not only for financial maintenance, but also for the wilful neglect of their parental role and the harm caused by their absence.
We urge Parliament and the Department of Justice to review current legislation and implement stricter penalties and enforcement for parents who fail to meet their responsibilities.
Our children deserve better.
Sign this petition to demand accountability, justice, and protection for single mothers and their children, and to help break the cycle of generational trauma caused by parental neglect.
