Support People Living With Invisible Chronic Illness

S Stacey Laura Quin · IE

People living with hidden illnesses such as Crohn’s disease, IBD, fibromyalgia, and other invisible chronic conditions should not have to prove they are unwell every time they need help. Too often, these conditions are treated as if they are minor, inconsistent, or not real because they are not always visible.

This affects students, workers, and families every day. Symptoms can change quickly, causing pain, fatigue, urgent bathroom needs, brain fog, and missed appointments. When schools and employers do not recognize these realities, people may lose attendance marks, face unfair discipline, fall behind, or leave education and work altogether.

We are asking schools, employers, and public service managers to adopt a clear written accommodation policy for hidden illnesses. That policy should allow flexible attendance, bathroom access, rest breaks, remote or adjusted duties where possible, and a simple way to request support without repeated suspicion or extra barriers.

This is not about special treatment. It is about practical fairness for people whose health needs are real even when they are not obvious. A sensible policy would help people stay in class, stay in work, and stay healthy instead of being pushed out by unnecessary rigidity.

The responsible decision-makers should put this policy in place now, train staff to understand invisible chronic illness, and make sure no one is penalized for managing a condition they cannot control. When institutions respond with flexibility and respect, people with hidden illnesses can participate fully; when they do not, the cost is lost education, lost income, and avoidable harm.
