The Hill High School should restore extensions and allow learners to wear neat, school-appropriate hair extensions again.
Having extensions is something many of us have been used to, and the new ban changes an important part of how we present ourselves at school. Hair is not a distraction by itself; for many learners, it is part of identity, confidence, and everyday comfort.
For students like me, caring for natural hair takes a lot of time and money. I do not hate my natural hair, but it can be tiring to manage it constantly, especially when school already demands so much from us. The ban also makes some learners feel that a personal choice about hair is being treated as a problem, when our uniforms already make us look the same in most other ways.
This policy affects confidence too. I have been feeling a bit of lower self-esteem because hair is one of the few ways learners can show individuality at school, and taking that away can feel unfair and outdated. The argument that extensions distract learners from education because they focus on beauty feels exaggerated, especially when schools that allow more freedom still produce disciplined, successful learners.
The principal and the SGB should review this decision and change the hair policy so that extensions are allowed again, as long as they are neat and appropriate for school. That would respect school standards while also respecting learners’ dignity, culture, and personal expression.
We ask the principal and the SGB to reconsider the ban and vote to reinstate extensions at The Hill High School at the next available school governance meeting. A fair school policy should support learning without needlessly limiting how learners choose to wear their hair.
