Socialising them makes all the difference big or small and the sooner the better.  There are not enough places if any here that allows for safe off leash exercise.  Council have too many "no dog" signs up despite the fact we pay a registration fee - what do we get for that?  Imagine if we all refused to pay for our little plastic tags?

I have friends in tauranga who cant find any off leash dog parks for exercising and socialising. What kind of dogs do you end up with when they arent socialised properly?

All cities need fenced dog parks. For many dogs this is their only opportunity to run safely - not all dogs have good road sense or perfect recall. We visit fairly regularly as parents live in the city.

I am a dog owner so is my daughter & son we love our pets & know how important it is to exercise our dogs our back yard is a gym for the human's and dogs awesome set up but our dogs need more

 I'm all for a great place to walk my dogs, but do you realise that you are allowed your dogs off lead in almost all the reserves in Tauranga?  Dogs must be under control, ie. can be recalled and control to avoid causing a nuisance, but they are allowed off lead.  You must carry a leash.  See this page for the full details:

There are only a handful of areas we are not allowed to take our dogs, and even less where they must be on a lead.  The little sticker with a dog on a lead seen at reserves, simply means dogs are alowed, there are further details noted if they need to be on a leash.  We are incredibly lucky with this policy - and I applaud TCC for allowing it.

If you look at the areas in NZ that have dog parks i.e Auckland and Christchurch, you will find their policies regardng dogs on reserves are very restrictive, CCC has over a full A4 page list of all the reserves that you are not allowed your dog - and it states the list is not complete and it includes the swimming beaches, and Auckland dogs are only allowed offlead in a few selected reserves or in the nominated dog parks.

Watch out what you ask for, I don't want a dog park if this means I will suddenly not be able to walk my dog off lead in the local reserves....

If you want a fenced off area to do training, try the Mount Dog Club grounds on Links Ave at Bayfair, fully fenced with closing gates - boring space but it has fences.

I think it benefits the whole community because while most dog owners are considerate, it is nice to have a place where you are not worried about the general public who may not like having dogs in the same park. In that way it helps both groups.

Publicity around dogs deemed as dangerous, I believe, will result in the Council favouring submissions from people who don't want dogs at all in their local park.

We have a very good position with park use now. I think we should be careful we don't back ourselves into a corner and end up barred from general park use!

The only No Dog areas in Tauranga are:

The Mount, Pilot Bay, Main Beach up to and including Leisure Island, within 200m of the surf clubs at Omanu and Papamoa, and the historic reserves., there may be another one or two but that is all. 

We can walk our dogs in town both centres no restrictions - can't do that in Rotorua!!  We have all the rest of the beach, Ferguson Park, Yatton Park, Johnson Res, Tye Park, Matua Foreshore, and the list goes on...

As it is very important for the community that all well kept dogs have the ability to socialise and play in public. Also, a great social outing for owners as well.

The last thing we want is to restrict access to other areas in Tauranga, we'll include this in the submission. Some dogs have poor recall, which ends in a life permanently on lead when away from home for fear of their safety and disturbing others, this can lead to negative socialisation and limited exercise opportunities, this is something we hope to negate with a securely fenced area (although not the only reason). The Links Ave area is great for training and smaller dogs, although not suitable for larger dogs for exercising. We are researching the parks in other New Zealand cities and collating the positive and negative information on them.

Again, thank you for taking the time to highlight a few good points, you clearly have good knowledge on what is available in the various areas. If you'd like to help direct the submission in the right direction for the betterment of everyone, you are very welcome to join the committee.

A dog park gives dogs and their humans a place to spend quality time together promoting an active, healthier lifestyles for both dogs and people.
I believe that all dogs using a park should be licensed in order to support local animal control agencies in enforcing their regulations. Giving dogs their own legal place to play and excercise in a safe environment reduces the risk of dogs running loose in public places where it is prohibited.

I am a bit over people complaining about dogs in 'their' area - beach etc. We have two beautiful, well behaved pooper scooped dogs who are very much part of our family. We would love to have the freedom to let them run without fear of a non dog lover disapproving. We don't understand those kind of people but we will happily stay out of their way if our boys can play with the other dogs and their owners who are much more our kind of people :-)

Dogs are family pets and deserve a safe place to play and excerise as do our children in playgrounds. A happy healthy well excercised dog is going to cause less problems than there are currently. So a dog agility park is a excellent idea.

I have huskies, I can't let them off lead unless fully fenced. It's sad that I can't see them running and playing at a park with other dogs or swimming.

I am from Christchurch originally and have seen how wonderful these places are for dogs socialization fun and safe exercise. This helps dogs become social with other dogs so there are less aggression issues also. This reduces dogs in public causing issues. It is such a fun way to see many dogs happy together. I was shocked when I moved here and I pay the same dog reg fees and there is not a single park for dogs.
