Pro lingua Latina in Jyväskylä

Latin Language is still used in many ways and knowing that language gives many professional advantages in different areas. Cancelling the education of Latin language, will put in risk the high standard of education and sophistication of the students but also the general base of knowledge among our civilization. Today our country is so lost in many (if not all) areas that combine our cultural identity, so is it really reasonable to cancel more and more subjects in our schools? I think not.

We have a great European tradition of reading, writing and thinking. I would like see the future generations to have a chance to be part of this tradition too despite the low life goals of our government.

Latin is a necessary tool for the serious study of very many subjects: ancient literature, of course, and with it the background of the modern literatures, but also ancient history, medieval and Renaissance history and philosophy, the history of science, Romance philology... Kill Latin and you cripple much else.

As a French Curator, specialized in archeology, I think Latin must be taugth to every one who needs it. It helps understanding roman languages in Europe, as well as scientific publication from the XIXth Century onward to our days, and a lot of finds from Roman times to the XVth century. Lingua latina defenda est !

Because the teaching of ancient languages, and ancient culture - which goes so closely with the language-learning - means so much to modern languages and culture, especially in Europe. I have myself visited and given papers at Jyvaskyla. It is important that small and (important) Departments continue to be given support. How can the excellent Politics Department at Jyvaskyla work properly without a Latin Department to support it.

Latin provides not only excellent basis for learning and studying languages, but also important knowledge of history and basics of the western culture. And on top of all of that Latin is important in science as well. Do the sensible thing, and keep Latin in curriculum!

Finland has a fine international tradition of Classical scholarship which it should be trying to maintain not destroy.

Classics - Latin and Greek - are necessry subjects, albeit on a small scale - for any Western university. Latin was the language of science from the Middle Ages to about 1850 and is therefore a necessary tool for any students of the history of science.

I studied Latin (as main subject) at the University of Jyväskylä in 1993-1998. My studies have been an asset during my career even if I do not teach/do research.

We need to stick together in speaking up against the dismantling of the humanities!

All the Petitioners are right: Latin courses should not be suspended at the University. We need to have in mind how important for the European culture Latin was and still is.

I signed because the opportunity to study Latin as a foundational language of European culture should not be lost, and because University managements are too quick to make decisions of this kind with only short-term aims in view.

Finland is a small country which makes a big contribution to the study of ancient history, which is such a crucial part of world history. The achievements of Finnish scholars in promoting interest in Latin are extraordinary. To end this tradition would be an act of cultural vandalism.

Latin is a basic language for the whole of Europe. It is not dead but lives in the words through which modern life is conducted.

Linqua Latina is very useful when studying culture and history of Western World. It is a key language to get in into various european languages and traditions of thinking.
