Because I love animals and care about their wellbeing
Guest#102 Jun 08, 2016, 20:25
I feel strongly that animals are not advocated for, and anything that will prevent their suffering and promote their welfare is a step in the right direction.

That is such a good idea.
The only voice they have is us
The only voice they have is us

The MPI seems ineffective in dealing with vile cruelty to farm animals. And SPCA is under-resourced and unable to cope.
Guest#105 Jun 08, 2016, 21:51
For a few years now during Christmas and other times too, I have spotted dogs roaming the streets, not strays, but lost dogs. I have on numerous occasions called the SPCA only to be told that unless the animal was injured they wouldn't act. Prevention and not remedy is key in all aspects of our lives and prevention of animal suffering should be the first rule in an organization like SPCA. A NZAP would definitely make the animal act more than a guideline would finally being to light the far larger amount of neglect, abuse and suffering of precious animals than currently known about. So many countries are leading with new laws and the implementation of those laws, NZ SHOULD NOT BE following the lead but being leader. Animals have feelings too only ignorant people and governments think otherwise.

As an advocate for those without a voice.
Guest#107 Jun 08, 2016, 22:26
Because I have fought for it for years. I hope that your added voices and efforts will finally bring it to pass. Blessings and good thoughts, Sue.

Because I have a American staffy. I am sick of his breed being targeted. Too much neglect and abuse is happening to our animals. Also pure frustration with keeping dogs on chains and unresponsiible parents not supervising children around dog.

Why would you not! Ill treatment of animals is shameful and should not be tollerated. We think we are the more intelligent species - then we should act like it.
Guest#110 Jun 08, 2016, 23:43
I have signed because I believe that we need a NZ Animal Police. Animals are sentient, intelligent beings and deserve the best we can give them. If this means an Animal Police, then please bring it on.

Abhor the way animals are treated and no suitable punishment for the mongrels who ill treat them
Guest#112 Jun 09, 2016, 00:26
This is long overdue. Animal welfare cannot continue to be governed by the MPI - when economic profits are at stake, animal welfare goes out the window.
Guest#113 Jun 09, 2016, 00:30
People who are cruel to animals have it in them to turn on humans too! Stop them before it escalates, through appropriate sanctions that actually deter others, and maybe give them some psychiatric help too - mistreating the vulnerable is just not acceptable behaviour!
Guest#114 Jun 09, 2016, 01:17
Too many sickos get away with ill treating animals. There is plenty of proof that shows that ill treating animals is just the start and these people always escalate to hurting and ill treating other helpless souls and that includes children. Stopping them early and giving them the appropriate punishment / treatment early on would solve so many issues. It's time we did more for those that do not have a voice

New Zealand is too soft on those abusing animal welfare. There needs to be firmer action and accountability.
Guest#116 Jun 09, 2016, 02:17
I signed because levels of treatment and abuse of our animals in New Zealand is appalling! to say the least. Used and abused a lot of them, not just domestic animals but farm animals as well. There needs to be a huge attitude change. I think it shows in how we treat our children as well.
Guest#117 Jun 09, 2016, 03:48
Because...... Animals can't defend themselves, they have no voice. We nd to be there voice. If we starved a child or human, left them locked up, abused them mentally or physically you'd get locked up, for that to a animal...... You'll get a smack on ya hand maybe a little fine or not able to own animals for x amount of years. It's bull shit an nz needs to WAKE UP.
Guest#118 Jun 09, 2016, 03:54
Simply because it makes sense to have animal police.
Guest#119 Jun 09, 2016, 04:05
Animal lover. Against cruelty of any type.
Guest#120 Jun 09, 2016, 04:06
It is about time for the judicial system to help prosecute animal abusers. Stop these people before they start hurting humans. Also, animals only have us to protect them.
Guest#121 Jun 09, 2016, 06:23
I think it would be a great idea as for to long animal cruelty is not seen as a very serious offence it would be good to change that and make sure there is someone out whose job solely is to protect from harm.
Guest#122 Jun 09, 2016, 06:44
because I don't like the current system
Guest#123 Jun 09, 2016, 07:23
I don't think the SPCA is coping with the volume of animal neglect and/or abuse cases and I am concerned at the escalating scale of these offenders who are no doubt an all-round risk to others and the police need to know who they are.
Guest#124 Jun 09, 2016, 07:49
I agree that our system of animal care and protection is out of date, the only part of the proposal I do not agree with is de sexing at 3 months, animals should be sold with a pre paid voucher to de sex. There are clearly more domestic pets than there are responsible pet owners so breeding should be licenced and controlled.

I am committed to ensuring animals are treated with respect, kindness and acknowledgement no matter what species they are.
