I will never be lightweight again. But when I was a competitive rower I was. And I think having a weight class like lightweight makes for an even playing field when it comes to competition. Not everyone is 6'6" (lol)

The idea of the removal of the lightweight 4 appears nonsensical, it is by far one of the most competitive rowing events.
Would the removal of the Mens and or Women's heavy 4x and introduction of the Lighweight women's 4- not allow for a near complete gender balance within rowing, and also allow for sculling and sweep to represented across both genders and both weight classes.

The preservation of lightweight rowing at the Olympic level is critical to the existence and expansion of lightweight rowing at lower levels of the sport. The university and highschool levels of rowing in Canada already lack equivalent events for smaller rowers compared to heavyweights, there will be little to no incentive to push forward and develop expanded competitions that can include physically immature or underdeveloped athletes in a competitive role. Participatory rowing for small athletes in heavyweight events is a good experience for young athletes, but its not the same as competing within an even field.

I have a lightweight son, who rows for UPenn, and the US U23 team last two summers. It as fascinating how fast and exciting these lightweight rowers all over the world are. It would be a shame if it no longer exists just because it's absence only equate to balancing numbers between male and female athletes. One beautiful sport shouldn't be sacrificed. It's the sport for truly normal sized men, who are extraordinarily strong.

A former lightweight. -I believe there should be at least one lightweight event for both men and women . There are many olympic- caliber rowing athletes that deserve a shot at a lightweight event in the olympics.

I am a huge supporter of lightweight rowing - as a class from scholastic/junior rowing through collegiate and international competition, it provides some of the closest competition in the sport.

 Because boxing is a combat sport rowing is not, keep the lightweight men's and woman's doubles, but getting rid of the lightweight men's 4 is the best option, the IOC simply won't allow any more rowing events and we could lose rowing as an Olympic sport altogether if this change is not made

I love rowing! A complete sport for everyone from 9 to 99 years old and from 30 to 130 kgs in weight! Lightweight sportsmen and women should also have the opportunity to compete at the highest level, in their own weight category, just as they can in other Olympic sports!

 That's the worst idea I've heard! The lightweight 4 is the best boat class to remove, all events are competitive and there should be a heavyweight event for each boat class. All good lightweights can be competitive as heavyweights.

As a lightweight rower, removal of this category would prevent future smaller stature athletes from competing, and reduce the talent pool leading into the sport. If this goes ahead, it would be a great tragedy.

Lightweight rowing allows for an even playing field across all physiques, and so should be preserved. To limit the sport to heavy-weights will have a negative effect on the promotion of rowing.
