Petition request
We, the undersigned residents and community members, respectfully request that Whitehorse City Council urgently assess and progress the designation of Brickworks Oval as a designated off-leash dog area.
Brickworks Oval is a valuable local open space used by a wide range of residents, including families, walkers, and dog owners. Many local dog owners are seeking safe, accessible spaces where dogs can exercise off-leash, socialise appropriately, and enjoy the health and wellbeing benefits that come from regular physical activity.
At present, Brickworks Oval is an on-leash area. However, Council has advised that residents may seek reconsideration of the current arrangements through the appropriate community and consultation process. This petition is intended to demonstrate that there is genuine community interest in exploring whether Brickworks Oval could be suitable for off-leash.
Designating Brickworks Oval as an off-leash area would provide significant benefits for the community, including:
- improved opportunities for dogs to exercise and socialise;
- increased physical activity and wellbeing for residents;
- a dedicated space that can reduce pressure on other parks and open spaces; and
a stronger sense of community among local park users.
We ask Whitehorse City Council to:
- Initiate a formal assessment of Brickworks Oval as a potential off-leash dog area.
- Include Brickworks Oval in any relevant review of dog off-leash areas and open space planning.
- Conduct meaningful community consultation with local residents, dog owners, and other park users.
- Publicly communicate the process, criteria, and timeline for considering any proposed change.
By signing this petition, we are asking Council to give the community the opportunity to have this proposal properly assessed and considered through its established decision-making process.
