Update: St Audley Road Traffic Calming — Where Things Stand (24 August 2026)

Thank you to everyone who signed and shared your accident stories — over 100 signatures made this impossible to ignore. Here's a full update on where the process stands.

What the JRA said

The JRA's Traffic Engineering report on our petition has been shared with us (signed version to follow). The headline: they have declined speed humps on the main stretch of St Audley, because the road is officially classified as a "Class 3 arterial" — and City policy prohibits humps on Class 3 roads. However, the report does support:

• A raised pedestrian crossing at the bus stop opposite the Bryneven Primary field (effectively a flat-topped speed hump — it will force traffic to slow)
• Traffic surveys at the St Audley / West Hertford intersection to assess a traffic circle
• Increased JMPD speed enforcement

What we're doing about the speed hump refusal

We're not accepting the classification as the end of the story:

1. We're challenging the Class 3 classification itself. St Audley isn't part of the city's arterial route network — it's a residential street with schools, a bus stop and home driveways that has become a cut-through. We've lodged a formal request with the CoJ Transportation Department to review the classification, which was last set in 2009 — 17 years ago, before most of the development that created today's traffic.
2. We've uncovered a precedent. The JRA has confirmed in writing that Coleraine Drive is also a Class 3 road — and its speed humps have remained in place for 17 years. So Class 3 status and speed humps clearly can coexist. This goes into our formal submission.
3. Councillor Lynda Shackleford is copied on everything and the matter is headed to the City's Petitions Oversight Committee.

Current status of each item

• Raised crossing: recommended in the report; we're pressing for a confirmed budget and installation date (sits with JRA Regional Operations)
• Traffic surveys: were promised by end of July; delayed due to a City overtime restriction — we've asked for a revised date
• Classification review: formally lodged with the Transport Department; acknowledged and under investigation
• JMPD enforcement: requested via the report — please note any visible enforcement (or absence of it)

How you can help right now

• Report every incident. If there's an accident, near-miss or property strike, photograph it, get a SAPS case number where relevant, and send details to [email protected] — the accident record is central to our case.
• Coleraine Drive and similar roads: if you know of speed humps or raised crossings on other busy connector roads nearby, snap a photo and share the location - [email protected]
• Stay signed up — numbers matter when this reaches the Petitions Committee.

This is a process, and municipal processes move slowly — but everything is now formally on record with three departments, and we're following up on fixed dates rather than waiting. Next update as soon as we have survey dates or a response on the classification review.
