Improve sightlines and value for money at Backstreet Boys arena concerts

M Maaike Polstra · NL

Why this petition?

To show the importance of listening to feedback from fans who paid a lot of money for concert tickets and were not always satisfied with the price paid in comparison to the concert experience and sightlines.

The Backstreet Boys' concert series in a large arena. A band that still boasts a massive global fanbase—fans willing to go to great lengths to attend a show. Their dedication remains immense, persisting ever since the group rose to fame in the 1990s.

It is understandable, that the initial announcement of concert dates triggered an immediate rush for tickets. The subsequent announcement of additional dates likely prompted some fans to purchase further tickets for later shows—this time securing better views.

Others did not have that option, as many people simply cannot afford to pay for such expensive tickets more than once.

And when you have spent so much money on a concert—a truly special experience, and for some, the first time seeing the boys live since the 90s—you expect a good view, at the very least, given the exorbitantly high ticket prices (especially for the stands).

Everyone understands that an arena is large and that you pay more for seats with good sightlines. Everyone also expects there to be screens for seats where the view of the stage is limited due to distance or the viewing angle.

What no one expects is having to pay hundreds of euros for seats with a poor view—seats where the big screen is invisible or only partially visible, or where two massive metal lighting towers have been placed (in addition to the standard, expected technical stacks).

To me, it is mind-blowing that the creative team responsible for the concert's technical design failed to consider beforehand the frustration caused by these technical marvels blocking the view.

Fans come for the guys; they want to see them and hear them sing. Technical features should enhance the performance, not cause annoyance.

The central stage was a great example of how technology can enhance the concert experience. The height—specifically the way the central section rose up—made the artists easier to see and was a genuine asset. The metal arrows, however, certainly were not.

Many people complained before the concert, but not everyone was able to get a different seat. Others didn't complain beforehand but later contacted the concert organizer, the ticketing agency, or the promoter—often receiving no response or a reply that offered no solution.

It’s outrageous; things really need to improve! When so many people have so many complaints, you can't simply dismiss them by saying it’s nothing, nothing can be done, or it’s not your responsibility.

To everyone involved in the organization, production, and execution of such major concerts or concert series: things really need to be better in the future. Take a leaf out of the book of the Dutch duo Suzan & Freek, who performed ten concerts at the GelreDome in Arnhem.

They used a full central stage with a large rectangular screen suspended above it, ensuring that everyone—from every angle—had a clear view of both the screen and the stage. That is how it should be done!

Fans are willing to pay a lot for expensive concerts by famous, popular acts like the Backstreet Boys, but they need to get real value for their money. Simply being there is absolutely not enough.
