Moratorium Preventing Data Center in Lysander, NY
Help us stop the planned Data Center in Baldwinsville by signing this Petition to Request the Town of Lysander institute a Temporary Moratorium Preventing Data Centers.
There is an active application with NYSIO to connect to the grid a proposed 300 megawatt (MW) hyperscale data center which would be built on the corner of Hencle Blvd and 690 in Baldwinsville. The facility for a 300 MW hyperscale data center is often up to 1.5 million square feet. A 300 MW draw is enough to power 200,000 homes and is nearly as much power needed for Mircon’s Phase 1 facility in Clay. This massive hyperscale data center would be adjacent to the Three Rivers Wildlife Area and would very likely impact precious animal life, air and water quality, and decrease housing values long term.
Below are just a few issues other communities accross the country have reported after allowing data centers to be built in their hometown:
1. The cooling systems for these massive facilities can cause a constant 24-hour hum, often over 80 decibels (comparable to the sound of a garbage disposal). Nearby residents complain of an inability to sleep. Large backup diesel generators also add to the noise and environmental pollution.
2. The cost of the utility grid upgrades necessary for hyperscale data centers are often passed on to the local residents. A 300 MW draw is massive. Upgrades will be required. National Grid currently charges for utility upgrades through increased consumer delivery charges. Supply & demand.
3. To cool their vast computer servers, 300 MW hyperscale data centers consume anywhere from 1 million to over 5 million gallons of water daily. That is enough water for the entirety of b'ville to use daily. Water pollution, limited natural resources and the impact during droughts are concerns especially fro many of the Lysander residents on wells and not village water.
4. Residential property values are reduced when massive and noisy million square foot hyperscale data centers are constructed nearby.
Other municipalities in New York currently have moratoriums preventing data center permitting while they evaluate community impacts and propose changes to their zoning and town codes.
By signing this petition, we are asking the Town of Lysander to institute a moratorium against constructing data centers in our town. The moratorium would allow time for our town officials to change ordinances and zoning laws to prevent irreversible harm to our beloved Baldwinsville community.
If you live, work, or care about Lysander, add your name to this petition and protect our environment, housing values, keep utilities affordable, and maintain our small-town quality of life.
