DO NOT CLOSE THE WIZZ AIR BASE IN BELGRADE

We call on the Government of the Republic of Serbia, the Ministry of Construction, Transport and Infrastructure, and the Civil Aviation Directorate to review any regulatory measures that could lead to the closure of the Wizz Air base in Belgrade and to ensure conditions that support its continued operation, development, and fair treatment within the market.

For more than fifteen years, Wizz Air has provided the people of Serbia with affordable access to dozens of destinations across Europe. Thanks to the competition introduced by the airline, millions of Serbian citizens have been able to travel more frequently, at lower prices, and with greater convenience than ever before.

This business model has also proven successful in other European countries, including North Macedonia, Montenegro, and Bosnia and Herzegovina, where citizens likewise benefit from stronger connections with the European Union.

There is now genuine concern that certain regulatory changes introduced by the authorities could result in the closure of the Wizz Air base at Belgrade Nikola Tesla Airport. Such a decision would affect not only one airline but, above all, the citizens of Serbia, the national economy, and the tourism sector.

Closing the base could lead to fewer direct routes, higher airfares, reduced connectivity between Serbia and major European cities, decreased competition in the aviation market, and the loss of jobs that directly and indirectly depend on the airline’s operations. Students, families, people working abroad, as well as the tourism and hospitality industries, would be among those most affected.

This petition is not an endorsement of any particular airline. It is a call for decisions affecting civil aviation to be made transparently and with careful consideration of their impact on citizens, the economy, and Serbia’s international connectivity.

We believe Serbia should encourage competition, investment, and development - not reduce opportunities for its citizens. Therefore, we respectfully request that any measures which could result in the closure of the Wizz Air base in Belgrade be carefully reconsidered and that citizens’ right to choice and affordable air travel be protected.
