We, the learners of this school, respectfully ask you to reconsider any rule that prevents Black girls from wearing neatly styled braids or laying their edges.
For many Black girls, braids are more than just a hairstyle. They are part of our culture, identity, and heritage. They also protect our natural hair from damage, making it easier to manage while keeping us looking neat and presentable.
Laying edges is not about breaking school rules or trying to stand out. It is simply a way of grooming our hair neatly, just as other learners use hair products to keep their hairstyles tidy. As long as it is done in a modest and appropriate way, it does not affect our behaviour, our learning, or the discipline of the school.
South Africa is built on the values of equality, dignity, and respect for diversity. Every learner should feel accepted and respected for who they are. Allowing neat braids and neatly laid edges promotes inclusion and helps learners feel confident without disrupting the school’s standards.
We understand that the school must maintain discipline and a professional appearance. We are not asking for extreme hairstyles or distracting designs. We simply ask that Black girls be allowed to wear clean, neat braids and natural hairstyles with neatly laid edges, provided they remain appropriate for a school environment.
We believe that a learner’s character, respect, and academic performance are far more important than the way their neatly groomed natural hair is styled.
We kindly ask you to review this policy and work with learners and parents to create fair guidelines that respect both school discipline and cultural diversity.
