Enforce Noise Bylaws – Stop Excessive Music in Northam

We, the residents of Northam, respectfully call on the Thabazimbi Local Municipality (Environmental Health Department and Municipal Manager) to urgently enforce noise control regulations in our community.

Taverns in Northam are regularly playing excessively loud music late into the night and early morning. This is disrupting families, disturbing children’s rest and studies, and harming the health and wellbeing of residents.

Legal Basis

Environment Conservation Act, No. 73 of 1989 (Section 25): Regulates noise, vibration and shock, prohibiting disturbances that negatively affect the public.

Noise Control Regulations (GN R154 of 1992): Prohibit music or noise exceeding prescribed levels, especially in residential areas.

Municipal Noise Bylaws (adopted in Limpopo): Require businesses, including taverns, to ensure noise does not disturb surrounding residents.

Our Request

We call on the Thabazimbi Local Municipality to:

1. Enforce noise bylaws against taverns playing excessively loud music.

2. Monitor sound levels in residential areas, especially at night and on weekends.

3. Take action and apply penalties against establishments that ignore the law.

Every resident has the right to peace, rest, and dignity in their own home. We urge the Municipality to uphold the law and protect the Northam community from ongoing noise pollution.
