Multilingual petitions: one petition, many languages
A petition can have a version in several languages. Each version has its own title, text and web address, and all of them collect signatures to the same list. The versions link to each other automatically, so a visitor who lands on the wrong one is one click from their own language.
How to add a language version
- Open your petition and choose Translate this petition into other languages in the petition menu.
- Pick the target language. Languages that already have a version are marked.
- Press Translate with AI to have the title, the text and your own field labels drafted for you, or write the translation yourself.
- Read the draft, fix anything that reads wrong, and check the web address of the new version.
- Press Publish.
Your name as the petition author is not translated. Before a translation is published we check it against our community guidelines, which takes up to about a minute.
One signature list
This is the part that matters most. A signature given on the Swedish version and a signature given on the English version land in the same list and count toward the same total and the same signature goal. You download them together and hand over one list, not one per language.
Cross-linked, each with its own address
Every version lives on the site of its own language, so the address matches the language of the text. A link that looks like the reader's own language is easier to remember and easier to pass on than a long address on a foreign brand.
On the petition page the other versions appear under Change language, built automatically from the versions that exist. You do not have to maintain those links.
Who it helps
A petition to a city with two official languages, which has to be readable in both or it will be dismissed. A cause that crosses a border, where the decision-maker is a ministry on one side and a region on the other. A petition in a country with a large group of residents who read a different language at home. In all of these, one list of signatures is worth more than three lists that nobody can add up.
Good to know
- One version per language per petition.
- A machine translation is a draft. Read it: a mistranslated demand is a demand you did not make.
- Each version can be edited separately afterwards from Edit in the petition menu.
- See the languages the service is available in on the language page.
Questions and answers
Do the language versions have separate signature counts?
No. Every version of the petition collects signatures to the same list and the same total.
Do I have to translate the petition myself?
No. Press "Translate with AI" and the title, text and your own field labels are drafted in the language you picked. Always read the result and edit it before publishing.
Can I have two versions in the same language?
No. One petition has at most one version per language. The form tells you if a version already exists.
Who can add a translation?
You, and anyone you have given the right to translate the petition as a co-manager.
What language is the signature form in?
The language of the version being signed. A visitor who opens the German version sees a German form.
