In 1946, the Nuremberg Tribunal declared the Waffen-SS to be a criminal organization, making an exception of people who were forcibly conscripted. Throughout the post-war years, Allies would apply this exception to the soldiers of Latvian Legion and Estonian Legion. The US Displaced Persons Commission in September 1950 declared that:

"The Baltic Waffen SS Units (Baltic Legions) are to be considered as separate and distinct in purpose, ideology, activities, and qualifications for membership from the German SS, and therefore the Commission holds them not to be a movement hostile to the Government of the United States."

Even before this decision, around 1,000 former Latvian Legion soldiers served as guards at the Nuremberg Tribunal, guarding Nazi war criminals. Afterwards, during Berlin Blockade, they took part in securing Allies facilities involved in the Berlin Airlift and later also were guarding USA Army headquarters

  • The Latvian legion was
    formed in the winter of 1943 however; March 16th 1944 is the
    day   the Legion was founded when Hitler
    ordered it be established.   All
    Latvian writers agree that the day marks the only time, the two Divisions
    of the Legion (15th and 19th) were fighting together
    against the Red Army.  Therefore, by
    making the 16th March a day to remember war dead,  Latvians,  (despite Latvian official protestations
    to the contrary), are making the day 
    when Latvian volunteers fought in the 15th and 19th
    divisions of the SS an act of commemoration.  As Israeli/Jewish critics have commented
    even if one takes the stance that the Latvian legionnaires were not
    criminals and that they were forced to fight for the Nazis, to commemorate
    the Legion is far from being a positive act.
  • It should be noted that
    nearly 130,000 other Latvians - enlisted to fight against the Axis
    (Hitler's Germany, Mussolini's Italy and Japan). Most of them fought in
    the Red Army that liberated their country from Nazism. After the
    negotiations among the Allies, Latvia, like other Baltic states, was absorbed
    by the Soviet Union.  Professor
    Vaira Vike-Freiberga sixth president of Latvia from 8 July 1999 – 8 July
    2007 has described the men who joined the Red Army as traitors.




  • Nearly 80,000 Jews, or 90 percent of Latvia’s pre-war Jewish
    population, were killed in 1941-42, two years before the formation of the
    Latvian Waffen SS unit — which some Latvians claim shows the unit could not
    have played a role in the Holocaust.

  • But an
    unknown number of Latvian Waffen SS soldiers were involved in the murder of
    Jews as auxiliary police — years before they entered the front-line unit.

This petition is not about why Latvians chose to fight the Soviets it is about the march of the legionaries and their affiliation with the SS.  It is also about the fact that, ‘although these units were
not involved in crimes against humanity, many of their soldiers had
previously served in the Latvian security police and had actively
participated in the mass murder of civilians, primarily Jews...The
stubborn insistence of Latvia’s SS Legion veterans to conduct a public
march to glorify their role as combatants on behalf of the Third Reich is
a clear indication that many Latvians have still not internalised the
lessons of WWII... not one of the numerous Latvian killers who
collaborated with the Nazis has been brought to justice since Latvia
obtained its independence, far too many Latvians feel free to identify
with those who fought alongside the perpetrators of the Holocaust rather
than with its victims’.

Я против героизации военных преступников. Я против политики Латвии основанной на идеалах нацизма. Я хочу прекратить существующий режим апартеида и этнократии, в результате которого население Латвии с 1989 года уменьшилось на 600 000 человек.

The SS were the most destructive force of WWII! How can the be considered heroes? They were the butchers responsible for so many civilian deaths. It's time that they be put in there rightful place in history! Not as heroes but as evil men!

They were men, they were for the most part ordinary men that is the frightening thing about the SS. They were as Hannah Arendt pointed out after the Eichmann trial and in her book 'the banality of evil' not demons, not evil, they were ordinary, they were average, they were men who committed evil acts bcause they were allowed to.

Governments that permit the honoring of murderers, perpetrators and collaborators to evil need lessons in reality. They must know that the world is watching them and that all decent citizens of the world do not condone activities that defile their nation. That's why a petition like this is vital.
