Little Mountain Chilliwack Against SD33 Proposed North Side Catchment Changes
Affecting Little Mountain Families
To: Chilliwack School District (SD33) Board of Education and Executives
From: Parents and Residents of Little Mountain Neighbourhood
We, the undersigned community members residing in the Little Mountain neighbourhood, respectfully express our opposition to the proposed school catchment boundary changes currently under review by Chilliwack School District.
Under the proposed changes, students living on Little Mountain would be reassigned to attend:
-
Little Mountain Elementary School
-
Chilliwack Middle School
This would replace the current pathway of attendance at:
-
Cheam Elementary School (to be replaced by new Rosedale Elementary School)
-
Rosedale Traditional Community School (for middle school).
These changes are scheduled to take effect in the 2027/2028 school year, with public consultation ending April 10, 2026, and final decisions expected by June 2026.
Our Concerns
As engaged parents and community members, we are concerned that:
-
Community Disruption
Many Little Mountain families have established strong connections and expectations tied to the current Cheam/Rosedale school pathway. Changing catchments disrupts established community ties and long-term planning for families with younger children. -
Loss of Educational Continuity
Families value the continuity, culture, and programming offered through the existing school pathway. The proposed reassignment alters that trajectory without sufficient evidence that it will better serve Little Mountain students. -
Community Identity & Geographic Alignment
Little Mountain has historically aligned with the Rosedale/Cheam school community. The proposed shift does not reflect the established identity and relationships of many neighborhood families. -
Impact on Future Planning
Many families purchased homes on Little Mountain, at great expense, with an understanding of existing catchment boundaries. Significant boundary shifts affect long-term planning and expectations for our children’s education. - Overcapacity
Increasing enrollment of Little Mountain Elementary has the potential to push this school beyond its capacity given that it is currently operating at 99% (390 max capacity with 388 students currently enrolled as of 2025/2026). The repercussions of this have a direct impact on the learning environment.
Our Request
We respectfully request that the Chilliwack School District and the Chilliwack School Board:
-
Reconsider the proposed reassignment of Little Mountain neighbourhood students.
-
Explore alternative solutions that maintain Little Mountain neighbourhood's school pathway to the new Rosedale Elementary (replacing Cheam Elementary) and Rosedale Traditional for middle school.
We believe community voices matter. As parents, we want what is best for our children — academically, socially, and emotionally — and we ask that our concerns be carefully reviewed before permanent boundary changes are implemented.
Public consultation closes April 10, 2026. Now is the time for our community to speak.
