PETITION TO RAND WATER TO IMPROVE WATER SUPPLY IN WARD 20 & WARD 36
We, the residents of Ward 20 and Ward 36 in the City of Ekurhuleni, herewith petition Rand Water regarding the constant water outages and minimal water supply in the area, as well as the lack of communication/ feedback on the said water outages.
According to section 27(1)(b) of the Constitution of the Republic of South Africa, 1996 (the Constitution), the supreme law of South Africa, everyone has the right to have access to 'sufficient' water.
Our incoming water supply is wholly insufficient to service the areas or the reservoirs. For Ward 20, this has been the case intermittently for more than a year and has been completely absent for a section of Ward 20, Bedfordview, for 4 weeks. For Ward 36, on the same service line as Ward 20, the supply has been erratic to non-existent for 5 days.
1. We demand that any failures that occur are communicated timeously to Ekurhuleni.
2. We demand that urgent measures and steps be taken to alleviate the impact of what is essentially a Human Right.
3. Regular and accurate communication would enable Ekurhuleni to provide timeous notice to their citizens and also to prepare the necessary backups.
4. However, when these outages take longer than a week, it is unreasonable to expect rate payers to have to rely on streetside water tankers and JoJo’s while being charged for non-existent services.
5. This principle applies equally to Rand Water.
6. Rand Water is being paid for a service that is not being provided.
