PETITION: TO URGENTLY RESTORE ELECTRICITY TO ALRA PARK SCHOOLS
We, the undersigned residents, parents, learners and concerned members of the community express our outrage at the ongoing electricity disconnections affecting schools in Alra Park.
We further call upon the Portfolio Committee on Education in the Gauteng Legislature, to call the MEC of Education before it to demand answers.
It is completely unacceptable that learners are being forced to learn in the dark while the ANC and PA-led Gauteng Provincial Government fails to protect our children’s basic education.The cutting of electricity to schools is a direct attack on the constitutional right to basic education.
The Gauteng Provincial Government cannot continue failing to intervene when schools fall into financial crisis and then standing by while our children suffer the consequences.
We therefore call on the ANC and PA-led Gauteng Provincial Government to:
1.Immediately restore electricity to all affected schools in Alra Park;
2.Ensure that no public school in Gauteng is disconnected from electricity due to financial failures by government;
3.Provide emergency financial intervention to schools facing municipal debt crises;
4.Protect learners from further disruptions to teaching, learning and examinations; and
5.Publicly disclose how many schools across Gauteng are currently disconnected from electricity or at risk of disconnection.
Enough with the excuses! Enough with the neglect!
