Under a proposed “uplift”, Flinders University wants to sack Australia’s foremost and prominent oceanographer Associate Professor Jochen Kaempf.
Jochen is a living legend among the marine sciences community who has proudly discovered Australia’s largest marine ecosystem – the Great Southern Australian Coastal Upwelling System – spanning more than 1500 km from Ceduna in the Great Australian Bight to Tasmania’s West Coast. This discovery is one of the biggest discoveries in the natural history of Australia.
Jochen is still highly research active with 10 single-authored journal papers in the last 2 years alone. He has published 3 acclaimed textbooks on ocean modelling and the ocean’s upwelling systems. Jochen is also a passionate and excellent educator. He is one of the few academics around who can understand and teach complex subject matter such as the science behind global climate change to the average student.
Jochen is a leading plankton expert. He is currently the only scientist who managed to computer-simulate the spreading of a toxic algal bloom of Karenia mikimotoi that currently wreaks havoc in South Australian waters. His skills are critically important for the understanding of such natural disasters. It would be a travesty to lose someone of Jochen’s research calibre and expert knowledge at times when his unique knowledge could be the most useful for society. See more of his algal bloom predictions here.
