Update the RMOW’s Commercial Parking Bylaws
To: Jack Crompton and the Resort Municipality of Whistler
We, the undersigned, believe that the current commercial parking bylaws in Whistler are not effective and are negatively impacting local businesses, residents, and, particularly our hardworking tradespeople.
The Issues:
Limited parking options for commercial vehicles, employees, and tradespeople including the reduction of size of commercial parking spaces and no longer allowing service decals to park in commercial zones.
Restrictive parking hours and regulations hinder business operations.
The current 30-minute parking allotment is insufficient for many commercial businesses, making it difficult for employees, contractors, and delivery personnel to conduct business efficiently.
Snow clearing rules prohibit parking on roads during winter months, further limiting parking options for commercial vehicles and creating undue hardship for businesses.
Inadequate parking infrastructure for growing businesses, tourism, and community needs.
The Unfair Cost Shift:
Current bylaws and parking fines are forcing businesses to absorb unnecessary costs, which are then passed on to customers. This creates a vicious cycle, hurting local businesses and the economy. We believe it's unfair to penalize businesses and customers for a lack of parking infrastructure.
Our Request:
We petition the Whistler Municipal Council to review and update the commercial parking bylaws to better support the needs of our community, including:
Increasing parking availability for commercial vehicles, employees, and tradespeople.
Extending parking time limits to accommodate business needs (e.g., 1-2 hour parking zones or allowing commercial vehicles to extend passed the current 2 hour max parking limit).
Implementing more common sense parking regulations to accommodate business needs.
Renewing specific parking zones for service trades.
Exploring alternative parking solutions, such as designated commercial parking exemptions for long term work site
Reviewing snow clearing rules to allow for temporary commercial parking during winter months.
Supporting Local Trades and Businesses:
We recognize the vital role our local tradespeople, contractors, and small business owners play in shaping our growing and evolving community. By updating the parking bylaws, we can help reduce operational challenges, increase productivity, and promote economic growth.
Thank you for your time and consideration.
