Urgent Opposition to Bail: Ensuring Public Safety in Bathurst CPF Sector 2
To the National Prosecuting Authority and the Magistrate of Port Alfred:
We, the undersigned residents and stakeholders of Bathurst, Eastern Cape, formally petition against the granting of bail to the suspect in question, currently facing alligations of assault with a deadly weapon and multiple counts of intimidation.
Our community opposes bail based on the following critical factors:
-
Imminent Danger to Life: The suspect recently attempted a life-threatening assault with a knife against a female resident and was only stopped by the intervention of bystanders.
-
A Proven Pattern of Violence: The suspect has a documented history of severe physical violence, including previous assaults.
-
Direct Witness Intimidation: The suspect has brandished weapons (including a panga) at residents and explicitly threatened victims at their places of work.
-
Escalating Threat Level: Within a four-day window, the suspect’s behavior escalated from verbal intimidation to attempted murder, showing a total disregard for the law and human life.
-
Risk of Retaliation: There is a high probability that the suspect will return to the community to exact "revenge" on those who have laid charges.
The Sector 2 Crime Prevention Forum CPF Bathurst (CPF S2) and the Bathurst Residents and Ratepayers Association (BRRA) stand together in this plea. We request that the court prioritises the constitutional right to safety for the women and children of this village over the suspect’s liberty.
Keep our village safe. No bail for violent repeat offenders.
